Description of the Sunset property:
The closure of Sunset Elementary School was a painful loss for the Shoreline community. The site includes 6½ acres of land with a beautiful view of the Puget Sound and Olympic Mountains in the heart of a quiet residential neighborhood of single-family homes. It is linked by informal trails to Boeing Creek and Shoreview parks.
Sunset remains a popular community gathering place, visited daily by Shoreline residents. The property includes a “blacktop” area at the back with several basketball hoops, room for bike riding and a covered outdoor play area. After a community fundraising effort several years ago, with support from the King County Parks Department, the Sunset PTA installed elaborate new playground equipment, which remains popular with families throughout the area. There is a large play field at the back of the school property that is used regularly by local youth soccer and baseball teams, along with neighborhood dog owners.
At the front of the school is a lovely memorial garden with two benches and an art brick patio, created and installed by Sunset students, teachers and parents in honor of two Sunset students, Kelsey and Hayley Dawson Byrne, who died in 2004.
The Kelsey & Hayley Dawson Byrne Memorial Garden was lovingly created by the students & adults from Sunset, with generous support from parents, neighbors, the Dawson family, local businesses and the community at large. In 2005, when the garden was dedicated, a trust fund was established to cover the on-going costs of maintenance. At present, there are funds available in that trust fund to maintain the Memorial Garden through mid-2015. The Shoreline School District (owners of the Sunset School Park property) and the City of Shoreline (responsible for maintenance of Sunset School Park) do not have funds in their budgets to maintain the Memorial Garden. The goal of this campaign is to raise $5000, which will provide for the maintenance of the garden through 2018. During that time, working with the city and school district, a long-term plan for the Memorial Garden will be developed.
The Memorial Garden at Sunset is a very special place - a place of peace, a place to remember, and a place to heal.
